Introductory Course

This course introduces the participants to the skills required in counselling and to the theory that underpins the psychodynamic way of working.  It is for anyone who feels they would benefit; for personal development, in their current work, or for those who wish to find out more before embarking on professional training.

There are no entry requirements for this course. 

This is a ten-week online course running each term.  It commences in January, April and September.  It is not a compulsory element of the professional training.

The aims and outcomes of the course are as follows:

  • An introduction to basic counselling skills of listening and responding
  • An introduction to the ethical guidelines
  • An experience of working with these skills in mind, within a group setting
  • Introduction to the importance of boundaries, confidentiality and containment
  • An introduction to an exploration of difference and diversity
  • An introduction to some of the main psychoanalytic theorists
  • An awareness of some of the different modalities of counselling

There is no assessment in this course.  Students who attend a minimum of 80% of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Foundation Certificate in Psychodynamic Skills and Attitudes

If you are interested in training in counselling and/or psychodynamic psychotherapy, if you already use these skills in your work or personal life, or if you would like to explore them for your self-development, then this course is for you.

The Foundation Level Course is a stand-alone Foundation Certificate in Psychodynamic Skills & Attitudes, but the contact hours also count towards the contact hours required for the Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling; therefore, an essential and compulsory element of the training ladder.

  • Personal and emotional suitability for exploring psychodynamic issues and counselling skills.
  • Evidence of the intellectual potential to complete the theoretical elements of the course, including written assignments.
  • Able to attend course dates

There is a single interview process for this course 

The re are two options for the Foundation level of training. 

There is a 33-week course (running approximately in accordance with the academic year) that commences in September and takes place on a Wednesday daytime. There are 2 additional Saturday workshops.

There is also an Intensive Foundation Course that runs for 6 weekends and 2 four-day weeks between January and June with 2 additional Saturday workshops.  Please see 'Course dates and calendar of events'.

Course Day

Each course day will include a theory seminar, counselling skills practice and an experiential group (this group activity is an opportunity to expand self-awareness and interpersonal skills).  In addition, during the course there will be two compulsory Saturday workshops and two personal tutorials.

Course Aims and Outcomes

  • Develop basic skills in listening, reflecting, summarizing and paraphrasing
  • Develop further skills of supporting and challenging others within a group setting
  • An understanding of the therapeutic frame
  • Develop knowledge of ethical guidelines, boundaries, confidentiality and containment
  • Elementary psychoanalytic theory of human development
  • An introduction to an exploration of difference and diversity
  • An 80% minimum attendance is required to pass the course
  • Skills Assessment
  • Completion and achievement of pass for two essays of 1500 words
